Power

The property doesn’t have any electrical service running to the property. I bought a pretty hefty gas powered generator at Costco (Firman Power Dual Fuel Generator 7500 Running Watts). I had a 100 watt solar panel by Renology from my teardrop trailer build and  bought 5 Kinverch 100 Watts 12 Volts Monocrystalline Solar Panels from Amazon. The Renology  MPPT controller I had for the trailer isn’t working anymore so I also had to get a new one. I went with the SolarEpic Triron Series 40A MPPT Solar Charge Controller. It supports up to a  150V panel so I think I’ll be covered for a while. I hooked it up and it started charging as soon as the sun hit the panels. I am not able to get the included USB  charging ports to work yet.

II built some frames out of 2x4s to attach the solar panels to. I am glad I bought the brackets to attach them because I don’t see any easy way to attach them otherwise.

After a summer of using them, I have noticed that the batteries drain power between Sunset and sunrise. I am only running the small Costway RV fridge via DC and charging a my phone. After a sunny day the inverter shows 13.1v as the last ray of sun hits it. In the morning I wake up to a reading of 12.1v. I will research the expected drainage during the off season but that seems considerable.

Towards the end of the season, the amount of sunlight is rapidly diminishing. A result of the shorter days, lower angle and the cloudier days. It is obvious that I will need to add additional panels and batteries if I intend to extend my stay up there. I am considering a wind turbine to take advantage of the gusty conditions but not this year.
