I spent a Sunday afternoon in the shopping and entertainment district of Boulder Co. No easy feat in this outdoors crazy town. Boulder and half of Denver were taking part in an afternoon bicycle race in and around town just as I was driving into town. I had to wind my way through a maze of blocked off and one lane streets in an effort to find a big enough spot to fit the car and the trailer. It took a long while since the other half of Denver not riding their bikes were in town to stroll around the outdoor pedestrian Mall to watch Buskers and line up for ice cream. I finally found ample room on a side street. Albeit under a low apple tree branch. The bike on the roof pushed the branch out of the way but it started raining unripe apples, leaves and twigs on the car, reminding me that it was up there. No harm though.
I strolled and people watched around the pedestrian mall part of town and was thoroughly entertained with the goings on.
It was getting late in the afternoon and still didn’t have a campsite. There aren’t any within 30 minutes of Boulder, Much as I would have liked checking Boulder nightlife, I decided to head up a mountain road and try my luck up there. I hadn’t plugged the trailer into an electric hookup in days and was worried that the battery would be getting low. I heard that is a bad thing for the battery.
It was a slow grind up the mountain and when I got the mountain town of Nederland, I realized why. I was at 9000 feet.
I roamed around town for a bit but the big black clouds starting to peek over the mountains had me concerned. The info desk guy said that there were a couple of nearby campgrounds in the direction I was heading the next day, one of them even had electric hookups. I headed on hoping I wasn’t too late to get a spot.
The sign said full but it was a government run enterprise so I double checked. Sure enough, they had a spot with 120v. I even bought firewood for a nice night communing with nature. I am happy to say it was the best most perfect fire I have ever built. Then it rained! Not much to do in my tiny trailer and no internet so it was an early bedtime. Dreaming of another perfect campfire not long off.
